What to know before you go
- Hoa Lu was Vietnam’s first capital, established in 968 by Dinh Bo Linh after the end of the period of Chinese domination. It later served as the capital under the Early Le dynasty before the seat of power moved to Thang Long (Hanoi) in 1010.
- Today, visitors come to see the restored temples dedicated to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh, along with the surrounding limestone landscape that makes Ninh Binh one of Vietnam’s most scenic provinces. The site is compact, easy to explore independently, and pairs well with nearby Trang An, Tam Coc, or Mua Cave.
