What to know before you go
- The Temple of Literature (Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam) was founded under Emperor Ly Thanh Tong to honor the Chinese philosopher Confucius. Six years later, it expanded to house Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam's first imperial academy and national university, which educated the country's royal family and elite scholars for centuries.
- The complex is divided into five serene courtyards connected by ancient brick pathways, manicured gardens, and traditional pavilions. Its most treasured historical assets are the 82 stone stelae sitting atop carved tortoises, which record the names, birthplaces, and achievements of scholars who passed the rigorous royal doctoral examinations.
