    Overview

Hanoi's take on Vietnam's beloved street sandwich — a crispy French baguette stuffed with cold cuts, pate, pickled vegetables, cucumber, cilantro, and chili sauce.

Banh Mi is Vietnam's most globally recognized street food — a crispy, airy French baguette (a legacy of colonial Vietnam) split and filled with a combination of Vietnamese ingredients. The Hanoi version tends toward simpler, more traditional fillings compared to southern styles: pate maison spread on the inside, cha lua (Vietnamese pork sausage), boiled egg or grilled pork, pickled daikon and carrot, fresh cucumber, coriander, and homemade chili sauce. It is the ultimate breakfast or anytime snack — satisfying, portable, and under $1.

    The story

    Origin & history

Banh mi evolved from the French baguette introduced during colonial rule (1887–1954). Vietnamese bakers adapted the recipe to use local rice flour, producing a lighter, crispier bread. After 1954, banh mi became a popular street food across both North and South Vietnam, each region developing its own filling style.
