    Overview

Striking terracotta-red sand dunes rising dramatically at the edge of Mui Ne village, where locals and tourists sandboard down the slopes at sunrise and sunset.

The Red Sand Dunes are the most accessible dunes near Mui Ne town, located just 2 km from the main resort strip. Their vivid terracotta-red color — caused by iron oxide in the sand — creates a striking contrast against the blue sea visible in the distance. The dunes are at their most dramatic at sunrise and sunset when the slanted light intensifies the red tones and long shadows shape the rippling sand ridges. Local children rent plastic sandboards for sliding down the slopes. The site is small compared to the White Dunes but far more convenient and equally photogenic.

What to know before you go

    • The Red Sand Dunes (Don Do) sit just 2 km from Mui Ne's main beach strip, making them the easiest dunes to visit without a long trip. The vivid red-orange iron-rich sand is eye-catching even in flat light.
    • Sunrise and sunset are the prime visiting times when the low-angle light turns the dunes deep crimson and casts long dramatic shadows. The panoramic view from the top includes glimpses of the South China Sea.
    • Local children congregate here and aggressively offer plastic sandboards for rent. Accept if you want to slide, but be prepared to pay them a tip rather than a fixed rate. It's all part of the local color.

    Weather

Open year-round. Best in dry season. Windy days make sandboarding more fun but sandstorms can be uncomfortable.
