    Overview

Vietnam's first marine protected area off Nha Trang, famous for spectacular coral reefs and diverse tropical marine life — the top snorkeling and scuba diving destination in the region.

Hon Mun Island hosts Vietnam's first Marine Protected Area, established in 2001 to preserve one of the country's richest coral ecosystems. The underwater landscape features extensive coral gardens in warm, clear water with visibility up to 15 meters, supporting hundreds of species of tropical fish, sea turtles, starfish, and other marine life. Both snorkeling and scuba diving are available. The island's distinctive black rock formations along the shoreline give it its name ('mun' means ebony in Vietnamese). Day tours depart from Nha Trang wharf each morning.

    • Snorkeling tours explore the shallower reef zones where parrotfish, angelfish, and clownfish dart through vibrant coral. Scuba diving tours go deeper to walls and caves where sea turtles and occasional reef sharks are spotted.
    • Several reputable dive operators along Nha Trang's Tran Phu Beach Street offer full-day island tours including boat transport, snorkeling or diving, and lunch. PADI certification courses are also available.
