Photos
What's in it
- Strong black coffee
- Egg yolk
- Condensed milk
- Sugar
- Butter or cheese in some versions

Best moments to enjoy it
Best enjoyed slowly while warm, especially in the morning or as an afternoon treat in Hanoi's Old Quarter.
Origin & history
Egg coffee was created in Hanoi in the mid-20th century, commonly linked to Cafe Giang and the city's wartime milk shortages. It became one of Hanoi's most famous drinks and is now a must-try part of the Old Quarter coffee scene.
How to order & pay
For a solo visit, order one cup and ask for it hot if you want the classic version. If you prefer less sweetness, say 'ít ngọt'. If the menu is unclear, point to 'cà phê trứng' or ask for 'egg coffee'.
Many cafes accept cash and some accept cards or QR payments, but small cash notes are still the safest option for older coffee shops. Carry 20,000-100,000 VND bills for easy payment and tipping is usually not expected.
Allergens, nutrition & health
Allergens
Contains egg and dairy; may contain caffeine and traces of butter or cheese depending on the recipe.
Nutrition & benefits
Provides a quick energy boost from caffeine and a satisfying dessert-like portion that can curb hunger between meals.
Health notes
Because it is rich and sweet, it can feel heavy if you are sensitive to dairy or sugar. If you have an egg allergy, avoid it. Drink water afterward if you are also having other caffeinated drinks.
How to eat it
Stir gently if the cafe recommends it, then sip the foam with the coffee underneath. Eat it slowly like a dessert drink. A small spoon may be provided, but you can also drink it directly from the cup.
