    The story

    Origin & history

Coffee was introduced to Vietnam in the 19th century during the French colonial period, and the phin drip method became a defining part of local coffee culture. Ho Chi Minh City is now one of the best places to experience everything from sidewalk cà phê sữa đá to specialty phin cafes.

    How to order & pay

    Ordering

For a classic order, say 'cà phê sữa đá' for iced coffee with condensed milk or 'cà phê đen đá' for iced black coffee. If you want it less sweet, ask for 'ít sữa' (less milk). Solo travelers can comfortably order one drink and linger without pressure in most cafes.

    Paying

Carry small cash for sidewalk stalls and local cafes, as many still prefer cash for low-value orders. Larger cafes in Ho Chi Minh City often accept cards or cashless payment, but it is smart to keep 20,000-50,000 VND notes handy.

    Good to know

    Allergens, nutrition & health

    Allergens

Contains dairy if ordered with condensed milk; may contain caffeine

    Nutrition & benefits

Provides a strong caffeine boost and can be enjoyed with less sugar if ordered black

    Health notes

Vietnamese filter coffee can be very strong and sweet, so start with one cup if you are caffeine-sensitive. If you have a sensitive stomach, choose black coffee with less condensed milk and avoid drinking it too fast on an empty stomach.

    How to eat it

Wait for the coffee to drip fully through the phin, then stir before drinking. Add ice if served hot, and adjust sweetness with condensed milk or sugar to taste. Use it as a slow, sit-down coffee break rather than a grab-and-go drink.
