Photos
What's in it
- Vietnamese robusta coffee
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Ice
- Hot water
- Phin filter
Best moments to enjoy it
Commonly enjoyed in the morning or afternoon, and often sipped slowly while people-watching at sidewalk cafes
Origin & history
Vietnamese iced milk coffee developed during the French colonial era, when coffee culture spread in Vietnam and condensed milk became a practical substitute for fresh milk. It later became a daily staple across Hanoi and the rest of the country.
How to order & pay
Say 'ít sữa' for less condensed milk, or ask for 'cà phê sữa đá' if you want the classic iced version. For a lighter drink, order 'bạc xỉu' in Hanoi-style cafes if available.
Many small cafes and street stalls still prefer cash, so carry small notes like 20,000-50,000 VND. Some city cafes accept cards or QR payments, but it is smart to confirm before ordering.
Allergens, nutrition & health
Allergens
Contains dairy from condensed milk; may be cross-contaminated with caffeine-sensitive ingredients or flavored syrups
Nutrition & benefits
Provides a strong caffeine boost and quick energy; condensed milk adds calories and sugar for a fast pick-me-up
Health notes
This drink can be very sweet and highly caffeinated, so go easy if you are sensitive to sugar or caffeine. If you have a sensitive stomach, avoid drinking it too quickly on an empty stomach.
How to eat it
Stir the coffee and condensed milk well, then pour over ice or let the drip finish before mixing. Sip slowly, since the flavor is strong and the drink is usually served in a small glass.
