About this 14-day Vietnam trip
This route moves from Hanoi into the mountains of Sapa, back for a bay day, then down through Ninh Binh, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Mekong in Can Tho. It suits travellers who want a mix of walking, scenery, and city time without overcomplicating the logistics. The pace is varied rather than slow, and you need to be comfortable with one long overland transfer plus a domestic flight.
From the author
This is a good Vietnam first trip if you want the country in one clean line without trying to do everything. It suits you if you like a mix of city walking, one real mountain section, and enough food and river time to break up the transfers. It is less suitable if you want a slow beach trip or you dislike early starts and one long move by road and rail. I would also steer you elsewhere if you want to avoid a domestic flight, because this route works best when you accept that one as part of the plan.

One last thing
This trip is strong on variety and works well for a first or second Vietnam visit when you want the north, centre, and south without wasting days. The trade-off is that the route is not gentle on transit days, and Sapa plus the return to Hanoi ask for a bit of stamina. If you have more time, I would add an extra night in Ninh Binh or a second Mekong day rather than stretching Hanoi. On a return trip, you could drop the city stop in the middle and use those days for a slower coast or more time in the highlands.
