About this 19-day Vietnam trip
This route runs from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City through Vietnam’s key stops, with enough variety to suit first-timers who want the main highlights without rushing every day. It mixes cities, bays, beaches, and highlands, so you get changing pace and climate rather than one long stretch of the same thing. It suits travellers who are comfortable with a few long transfers and want a practical overland line through the country.
From the author
This is the right Vietnam route if you want the country in one clear line rather than a loose collection of stops. It works best for first-timers, solo travellers, and anyone who wants a mix of food, history, coast, and a cooler inland break without constant packing and unpacking. You do need to be comfortable with several long transfers, including an overnight train, and with some days that are more about moving than seeing. If you want a slow beach holiday or a pure trekking trip, look elsewhere.

Origin
Bánh tôm Hồ Tây rose to fame in Hanoi in the 1930s along Co Ngu road (now Thanh Nien), where street vendors sold freshly fried shrimp fritters to people strolling between West Lake and Truc Bach Lake. The original recipe used small shrimp caught directly from West Lake, prized for their thin shells and sweet flesh. As the lake's shrimp population declined over the decades, vendors switched to fresh river shrimp and field shrimp, but the recipe and the lakeside tradition have remained essentially unchanged for nearly a century.

One last thing
This trip does a good job of showing Vietnam’s range without forcing you to backtrack. The trade-off is that the southbound movement comes with a few long transit days, so it is not the route if you want every stop to feel relaxed. If you had more time, I would add one more night in Hue or Da Lat rather than trying to squeeze in extra cities. On a return trip, slow the pace and choose either more coast or more highlands instead of both.
