About this 18-day Vietnam trip
This route runs Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue, Ninh Binh, and Hanoi in a sensible northbound line. It suits first-timers who want a mix of food, history, and some nature without committing to hard trekking or a packed overland grind. The pace is steady rather than slow, with a couple of longer transfer days that are part of the trip.
From the author
This is the Vietnam route I would send a first-time visitor on if they want a clear northbound line and not a scramble. It suits you if you want cities, food, and heritage with a few scenic breaks, and it is less suitable if you want quiet beaches or a trekking-heavy trip. You need to be comfortable with flights, trains, and a couple of long transfer days, because the movement is part of the design. It works best when you are happy to do a lot in each stop without trying to turn every day into a travel day.

Day-by-day itinerary

Stops
Ho Chi Minh City
Vietnam · Days 1–5 · 4 nights
Vietnam's largest city and economic powerhouse — a dazzling mix of street food culture, war history, rooftop bars, and non-stop urban energy.
This is the right first stop if you want Vietnam to hit you immediately, not gently. I would use Ho Chi Minh City to get your bearings, eat well, and do the war-history core before the trip starts moving north.
Keep the sightseeing tightly focused on District 1 and do the rest on foot or by short rides, because this city rewards simple logistics more than overplanning. It suits first-timers and solo travellers who can handle traffic and noise, and it is less suitable if you want a soft landing or a slow pace on day one.
Day 1 in Ho Chi Minh City
5 places · 12:00–21:00
Why this day works
Start light in Ho Chi Minh City, because the first day is for orientation, not for chasing everything at once. Do the central sights on foot, then keep the evening simple around Nguyen Hue and a short food stop.
This is the right opening for first-timers and solo travellers who want an easy landing after a flight. It is not the day to push far across the city or overbook dinner; the heat, traffic, and noise will punish that.
If you want to save time and energy, stay in District 1 for this first night so you can move between the market, the post office, and the walking street without relying on taxis. That gives you a cleaner handover into the heavier history day next.

Nam Vang is the Vietnamese name for Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The dish originates from kuy teav, a Cambodian noodle soup popularized by ethnic Chinese vendors in Phnom Penh. When Chinese-Cambodian migrants settled in Cholon and Saigon in the early 1900s, they brought the recipe with them. Vietnamese cooks adapted it — using local rice noodles, a cleaner pork bone broth, and adding shrimp and quail eggs — creating a uniquely Vietnamese version that became a staple of southern street food culture.

The author on this journey
This is a long transfer, but it is the right way to break the south-to-central run if you want to keep the trip simple. Book the flight early enough to protect the same-day connection to Hoi An, and do not leave the airport transfer as an afterthought — the ride from Da Nang to Hoi An is the part that makes this feel like one journey, not two separate legs.
If you want to save money, keep the flight flexible and spend less on the hotel night before departure, not on the transfer itself. The practical cost here is time more than cash, so I would use the rest of the day for an easy last lunch in District 1 and a clean handover to the next stop rather than trying to squeeze in another museum.

Bánh mì chảo evolved in Hanoi as a local adaptation of French bread culture — rather than eating the baguette as a cold sandwich, Hanoians began cooking the fillings hot in a small iron skillet and serving the bread on the side for dipping. The style became popular among students, workers, and families looking for a hearty and affordable morning meal, and is now considered one of Hanoi's most distinctive breakfast dishes.
One last thing
This trip does a good job of showing Vietnam in layers: southern energy, central heritage, and a strong finish in the capital. The main trade-off is that the longest transfers take real time, so if you dislike transit days you will feel them. If I had more time, I would add a night in the countryside around Ninh Binh or a second day in Hue to slow the middle of the route. On a return trip, I would also split Hanoi with time in the north for a less compressed ending.
