About this 14-day Vietnam & Thailand trip

This 14-day route moves from Hanoi to Da Nang, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phuket, so you get a clean mix of culture, food, and coast without too much backtracking. It suits travellers who want variety and can handle a few flights and one tighter transfer day. If you want a slow overland trip or long trekking days, this is not the right fit.

    From the author

This is a good route for a first or second trip to Vietnam and Thailand if you want variety without doing anything extreme. It works best for you if you are happy to use flights to save time and you prefer cities, food, and beach time over long trekking or remote travel. I would not send you here if you want a slow inland route or a very low-budget overland trip. The pace is steady, and the trip rewards travellers who are comfortable moving every few days.

    Hanoi

Vietnam's thousand-year-old capital where the ancient Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, French colonial architecture, and vibrant street food culture blend seamlessly.

This is the Hanoi stop I would keep for a first trip, because it gives you the city at the right scale: Old Quarter lanes, lake time, and one serious history block without forcing you to rush across town all day. It suits you if you want food, walking, and a bit of old-capital texture before the route turns coastal. If you prefer quiet streets or a very slow start, this is not that trip.

Stay central and do most of it on foot or by short taxi hops. One full day is enough for the core, and a second day is for the museums and government district; beyond that, the city starts to repeat itself unless you are here mainly for food or nightlife. It works best when you accept the traffic, start early, and keep the evening loose for the Old Quarter rather than trying to cross the whole city twice.

    Day 1 in Hanoi

    8 places · 12:00–23:00

    Why this day works

Start light on day one. You arrive into Hanoi with enough time to walk the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the cathedral area without trying to force too much into the afternoon.

Use this first day for food and a first read on the city, then keep the evening flexible. The night market and Ta Hien work best if you are happy to stay out late, but you can just as easily cut them and keep the day manageable after travel.

If you want the best version of Hanoi, do the walking before sunset and save the heavier meal stop for later. That gives you a clean handover into the next days, when the temple and museum visits make more sense once you are properly oriented.

      Origin

Banh mi evolved from the French baguette introduced during colonial rule (1887–1954). Vietnamese bakers adapted the recipe to use local rice flour, producing a lighter, crispier bread. After 1954, banh mi became a popular street food across both North and South Vietnam, each region developing its own filling style.

      Origin

Bia hơi was introduced to Hanoi in the late 19th century during French colonial rule, drawing on Czech brewing techniques. The Hà Nội Brewery (founded 1890) and later Việt Hà Brewery became the main suppliers. Beer is brewed fresh each day and distributed in large kegs (boong) to street stalls across the city. During the subsidy era after 1954, bia hơi became the drink of the working class — affordable, communal, and deeply woven into Hanoi daily life.

    Day 2 in Hanoi

    9 places · 08:00–23:05

    Why this day works

This is the day to keep Hanoi on a short leash. Start with Bun Thang and the Temple of Literature, because those two work best before the city gets hot and crowded, and they give you a clean read on the capital without turning the morning into a slog.

Save Hoa Lo Prison and the Vietnamese Women’s Museum for the afternoon, when you want indoor time and a slower pace after the morning walk. If you are here on a weekend, leave room for the night market and Hoan Kiem Walking Street, but do not try to force everything into one long loop.

This day suits you if you like a mix of history, food, and walking with short hops in between. It is less suited to travellers who want a lazy day, because Hanoi asks you to move often and pay attention.

If you had another day, I would use it for a quieter corner of the city or to slow down around West Lake, since this itinerary already gives you the central sights and the food stops without much spare time.

    Why this day works

This is the day to keep Hanoi flexible and let the bay trip do the heavy lifting. Go out early for Bai Tu Long Bay; that is where the value of the day is, and it is the one activity here that really benefits from an early start.

Once you are back, keep the evening simple around West Lake and Tran Quoc Pagoda. That area works well after a long cruise because it is calmer than the Old Quarter, and you do not need to plan much transport if you are already based centrally. If you try to squeeze in too many extra stops, the day stops feeling like a break and starts feeling like a transfer day.

West Lake Shrimp Fritters fit best as an easy late snack, not as a full dinner plan. They are worth it because they anchor the lake stop in something local, but do them after the cruise when you want a low-effort finish rather than another sit-down meal.

Best eaten immediately after frying while the batter is still crisp. Afternoon to early evening is the classic time — ideally by the lakeside.

      Origin

Bánh tôm Hồ Tây rose to fame in Hanoi in the 1930s along Co Ngu road (now Thanh Nien), where street vendors sold freshly fried shrimp fritters to people strolling between West Lake and Truc Bach Lake. The original recipe used small shrimp caught directly from West Lake, prized for their thin shells and sweet flesh. As the lake's shrimp population declined over the decades, vendors switched to fresh river shrimp and field shrimp, but the recipe and the lakeside tradition have remained essentially unchanged for nearly a century.

The style became popular among students, workers, and families looking for a hearty and affordable morning meal, and is now considered one of Hanoi's most distinctive breakfast dishes.

The dish reflects Central Vietnam's cooking logic: maximum flavor, minimal waste, with the small amount of intensely reduced broth eliminating the need for large quantities of stock. In Hoi An, the dish has been refined over generations by street vendors and market cooks, and today it anchors the morning food culture of the ancient town alongside cơm gà and cao lầu.

      Origin

Bánh đập hến xào is deeply tied to Cẩm Nam island and the Thu Bồn River, which has sustained Hoi An's fishing and farming communities for centuries. The tiny hến (baby basket clams) are a seasonal river harvest unique to the Thu Bồn ecosystem. Local families on Cẩm Nam island have served this combination for generations as an affordable daytime snack. The dish is rarely found outside Hoi An, and the hến from this specific river are considered to have a sweeter, more delicate flavor than marine clams.

When Chinese-Cambodian migrants settled in Cholon and Saigon in the early 1900s, they brought the recipe with them. Vietnamese cooks adapted it — using local rice noodles, a cleaner pork bone broth, and adding shrimp and quail eggs — creating a uniquely Vietnamese version that became a staple of southern street food culture.

      Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is a pioneering ethical sanctuary in Paklok, Thalang, set on 30 acres of tropical jungle bordering Khao Phra Thaeo National Park. It provides a lifelong home for rescued retired working elephants and focuses on observation, education, and welfare rather than riding, bathing, or feeding interactions. Solo travelers can expect a well-organized, guided visit with transfers, vegetarian meals on longer programs, and a strong emphasis on responsible tourism and elephant conservation.

      Promthep Cape

Promthep Cape (Laem Phromthep) is one of Phuket’s most iconic viewpoints, especially popular at sunset. Located at the southernmost tip of the island near Rawai, it offers wide Andaman Sea panoramas, a lighthouse area, and a classic stop on Phuket sightseeing routes. It is a very popular, often crowded attraction, so solo travelers should arrive early for a calmer experience, keep valuables secure, and plan transport in advance for the return trip after sunset.

      Laem Sing Beach

Laem Sing Beach is a small west-coast beach in Phuket, Thailand, tucked between Surin Beach and Kamala Beach. Road access has been closed for years, so visitors usually reach it by a short boat ride from Surin or by a rocky coastal walk at low tide. The beach is prized for its quieter atmosphere, scenic granite boulders, and good swimming and snorkeling conditions in calm weather, making it a strong choice for solo travelers who want a more peaceful Phuket beach day.

    Day 14 in Phuket

    Open day — nothing scheduled

    One last thing

This trip does a good job of linking Vietnam’s main urban stops with an easy beach finish in Phuket, so you get a lot of range in two weeks. The main trade-off is the number of flight legs, which makes it efficient but less relaxed than an overland route. If you had more time, I would add a night in Hue or give Hoi An one extra day, because that is where the itinerary feels most compressed.
