About this 21-day Vietnam trip
This 21-day route runs Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Ba Na Hill, Hue, Hanoi, Bai Tu Long Bay, back to Hanoi, and on to Pu Luong. It suits travellers who want a mix of cities, food, history, and lighter nature without rushing every day. The pace is varied rather than fast, with a few transfer-heavy days that need some patience.
From the author
This is a good first Vietnam route if you want the country in layers rather than all at once. It gives you cities, food, imperial history, a quiet bay, and a mountain finish, so you need to be comfortable with several transfers and a few long travel days. I would not choose it if you want a single-base trip or if you dislike switching hotels. It works best in dry or shoulder-season conditions, when the bay and the northern hills are easier to enjoy.

Stops
Ho Chi Minh City
Vietnam · Days 1–5 · 4 nights
Vietnam's largest city and economic powerhouse — a dazzling mix of street food culture, war history, rooftop bars, and non-stop urban energy.
This is the right opening stop if you want Vietnam to feel immediate rather than staged. Ho Chi Minh City suits first-timers and solo travellers who can handle noise, traffic, and a fast first day, because it gives you food, history, and a strong urban reset all at once.
Keep your first afternoon loose and stay central in District 1 if you can. Two to three days is enough to get the point; after that, the city starts to repeat itself unless you are here mainly for dining and nightlife.

Nam Vang is the Vietnamese name for Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The dish originates from kuy teav, a Cambodian noodle soup popularized by ethnic Chinese vendors in Phnom Penh. When Chinese-Cambodian migrants settled in Cholon and Saigon in the early 1900s, they brought the recipe with them. Vietnamese cooks adapted it — using local rice noodles, a cleaner pork bone broth, and adding shrimp and quail eggs — creating a uniquely Vietnamese version that became a staple of southern street food culture.

Hoi An
Vietnam · Days 5–8 · 3 nights
UNESCO-listed Ancient Town with weathered wooden shophouses, colorful lanterns, tailor shops, and some of Vietnam's most beloved local dishes.
This is the stop we keep in the route for travellers who want Hoi An to do more than just look pretty at night. You should use the first afternoon for the Ancient Town and one or two core landmarks, then slow the rest of the stay into food, a short riverside wander, and a half-day out to the villages or beach. It suits first-time visitors and solo travellers well because the centre is easy to read on foot, but it is less useful if you want nightlife or a base that feels local after dark.
Give the old quarter real time, then keep the rest flexible. Hoi An is compact, so you do not need to over-plan transport inside town, but you do want to avoid trying to see everything in one long sweep because the heat and crowds make that tiring fast.

The tiny hến (baby basket clams) are a seasonal river harvest unique to the Thu Bồn ecosystem. Local families on Cẩm Nam island have served this combination for generations as an affordable daytime snack. The dish is rarely found outside Hoi An, and the hến from this specific river are considered to have a sweeter, more delicate flavor than marine clams.

Hue
Vietnam · Days 10–13 · 3 nights
The former imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, renowned for its walled Citadel, royal tombs along the Perfume River, and the most refined cuisine in Vietnam.
This is the right stop if you want Hue to be more than a quick imperial checkpoint. It suits travellers who like history, food, and a slower rhythm after the busier central coast, especially if you are happy to split the day between monuments and meals.
Give the Imperial City real time, then keep the rest selective: An Dinh Palace and Dong Ba Market are enough to round out the picture, and the Perfume River boat ride works best when you treat it as a short evening add-on rather than the main event. Hue is easy to cover by taxi or motorbike, but the heat and spread of the sights make it a poor place to overpack; one full day on the Citadel side and one day for tombs or the river is usually the right balance.

Hanoi
Vietnam · Days 13–15 · 2 nights

Vietnam's thousand-year-old capital where the ancient Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, French colonial architecture, and vibrant street food culture blend seamlessly.
This is the Hanoi stop I keep for travellers who want the capital to be practical, not polished. It suits first-timers, solo travellers, and anyone who wants a clean mix of food, history, and an easy walking core after the more intense pace of Hue. You should like moving on foot and using short taxi hops when the heat or distance makes sense; if you want a quiet base or a city that sleeps early, this is not the right fit.
Give the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem area the most time, then keep the rest of the city selective. Two days is enough to get a clear read on Hanoi before you head into the bay, and it works best when you treat evenings as flexible rather than overbooked.

Vietnam's thousand-year-old capital where the ancient Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, French colonial architecture, and vibrant street food culture blend seamlessly.
This is the Hanoi stop we keep for a second look, not a first impression. After the bay, you use it to reset into the city’s food and street life before the final move north to Pu Luong. It suits travellers who want a compact, walkable base and do not mind another round of traffic and pavement dining.
Keep your plan tight: the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, and one or two museum or temple stops are enough. You do not need transport for most of it if you stay central, and the real trade-off here is noise and congestion, which make this a poor fit if you want quiet evenings or a slow city break.

One last thing
This route does a good job of showing you how different Vietnam feels from south to north, without making every stop a sprint. The main trade-off is movement: you spend enough time in transit that you should not add too many extra side trips. If you have more time, I would keep one more night for Hue or Hanoi rather than trying to squeeze in another city. On a return trip, I would also slow down and give either the central coast or the north one full extra base.
